Engineering Marvel in the Eastern Alps

Opened in 1935, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße) is widely celebrated as one of Europe's premier driving roads. Engineered specifically to showcase the natural grandeur of Austria’s highest peak (the Grossglockner, standing at 3,798 meters), the road is a masterclass in civil engineering and asphalt geometry.

Key Driving Highlights

Edelweißspitze (2,571m): The highest accessible vehicle point on the pass. Reached via a narrow, cobblestone branch road featuring 6 ultra-tight switchbacks. Offers a breathtaking panoramic view of over 30 mountain peaks over 3,000 meters high.

Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe: The prime visitor point positioned directly opposite the Pasterze Glacier and Grossglockner peak. Includes multi-level vehicle parking and high-alpine exhibition halls.

Mechanical Preparation & Brake Telemetry

Descending an alpine pass with steep 12% gradients requires strict gear management. Use engine braking in lower gears (2nd and 3rd) rather than riding brake pads continuously, preventing brake fluid boil and pad glazing.
